Cloud Computing: A Reality in 2011

A survey at a gathering among Filipino CIOs reveal that the majority of local companies are looking at 2011 for their cloud implementation.

In a survey at Computerworld's CIO Forum on Cloud Computing held just a few days ago, 71% answered they are already looking at a cloud implementation in about a year's time for their companies.  Considering that local businesses have been known to be traditional and more cautious with new technology compared with their Asian counterparts,  this comes quite a surprise.

What is not surprising though is that over 2/3 of the respondents show their preference in building a private cloud with the few remaining looking to the public cloud because of inherent business more tailored for SaaS.

Overall, these results are consistent with what is happening in the region.  A new report from Ovum says that APAC is a hot-spot for cloud computing with companies from China, Japan and India looking to invest more in the cloud.  Compared to Europe, which primarily because of security concerns, even have a more distant timetable for cloud computing, acording to Brocade.

It's far too early and a more substantial survey has to be done in order to get more significant measures and insights on cloud computing adoption for Philippine enterprises.  Yet, with the rapid pace of development happening within the cloud industry, there doesn't seem to be an entity with ability to take the lead in such a project.  If the recent forum is to serve as an indication, overall interest in the benefits of cloud computing among local CIOs is expected to go up some more.

And given the full attention they gave to every presentation, it is safe to say that for them, at least, cloud computing is not hype.  It is as real as the business that they are all looking to innovate and grow by leveraging what technology has to offer and how it fits into their plans.
